For our first Live at Lunch of the 2019-20 season, we welcome pianist Jasmin Allpress, from the Royal Northern College of Music, with a virtuosic and entertaining programme of music. A prize-winning soloist at RNCM, Jasmin has performed John Ireland’s Piano Concerto with the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra and had a piece by composer Michael Finnissy dedicated to her.
Her programme begins with one of Haydn’s greatest sonatas, before three pieces from Debussy’s early works, the impressionistic Arabesques and the famous Clair de Lune. These are mirrored by Gershwin’s three Preludes, where bluesy tunes and jazzy rhythms demonstrate his genius for piano writing.
Two more preludes follow, with Rachmaninov showcasing his lyrical and virtuosic piano writing and his trademark Russian soundworld. The recital ends with a bombastic showpiece of Paganini variations, not by Rachmaninov, but by contemporary Russian composer Alexander Rosenblatt, incorporating the sounds of Gershwin, Joplin and Art Tatum – a fantastic way to sign-off this great programme.
Access to the Dress Circle foyer will be open from 12.15pm, and the bar will be open for refreshments, before the talk at 1pm.
Yarn Bar is also open every day from 11.30am for coffee, brunch and lunch.
