Saint-Saens Symphony No 3 ‘Organ’
Ravel Valses Nobles et Sentimentales
Alex Robinson Conductor
Two French composers feature in this concert. Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No.3 is well known as the ‘Organ Symphony’. Composed in 1886 when he was at the height of his career as a composer and as a famous organist, he said of this work, ‘I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished I will never achieve again.’ A wonderful opportunity to hear the Binns Organ, as well as piano scored for both two and four hands, as part of this melodic symphony with some grand and majestic passages.
Born in the later part of the nineteenth century, Ravel was a pupil of Saint-Saëns’s pupil and friend, Fauré. Intrigued by the waltz genre, Ravel’s Valses Nobles et Sentimentales is influenced by Schubert piano works, although the musical style is considered French rather than Viennese, with a variety of contrasting moods.
