Piano Sonata No.13, Op. 27, No. 1 ‘Quasi una fantasia’
Piano Sonata No.14 Op. 27, No. 2 ‘Moonlight’
Diabelli Variations, Op. 120

Multi-award-winning pianist, Paul Lewis CBE, has built an unassailable reputation as a performer of Beethoven. He was the first to perform a complete cycle of the composer’s concertos in a single BBC Proms season and his recordings of the Piano Sonatas have achieved benchmark status. This concert offers the opportunity to experience his artistry in some of Beethoven’s most iconic music.

The 13th and 14th Sonatas, composed as a pair between 1800 and 1801, are united by their fantasia-like spirit but divided by their relative fame. The ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, which earned its nickname because its opening rippling motion evoked moonlight shimmering on Lake Lucerne, remains one of the best-loved of Beethoven’s output. The 13th is far less familiar but actually more radical. With inverted movements, played without a break, it’s a free-flowing, often playful departure from the norm that revels in contrastive effects. An unassuming waltz by an Austrian music publisher was the inspiration for Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations, arguably the greatest such set since Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Written between 1819 and 1823, their stylistic variety and expressive range is utterly unique and led composer Arnold Schoenberg to describe them as the “most adventurous work by Beethoven”.

This event is part of our Beethoven 250th Anniversary Celebrations – in the year of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary all thirty-two of his piano sonatas will be performed in ten concerts over four days, at the Royal Concert Hall and Djanogly Recital Hall, Lakeside Arts
