Continuing our successful Theatre Royal heritage programme, we now widen our free theatre talks series.

Writer, theatre historian and former general manager of the Theatre Royal Nottingham, Richard Smedley will be discussing his recent biography The Life and Times of Joseph Smedley.

Utilising detailed and intricate research, Richard Smedley vividly portrays the world of touring theatre in the early eighteenth century.

Born in 1784, Joseph Smedley was an actor and theatre manager who plied his trade around Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Rutland and further afield.  It is a time of strolling players where family played a strong role to fill many of the roles required on stage.

In this special Live at Lunch, Richard Smedley will be discussing his namesake from over 150 years ago in what promises to be a highly informative and entertaining talk.

Copies of the book will also be available to purchase at this event.

Access to the Theatre Royal Dress Circle foyer will be open from 12.15pm, and the bar will be open for refreshments, before the performance at 1pm.

Yarn Bar is also open every day from 11.30am for coffee, brunch and lunch.
