We begin the New Year of Live at Lunch performances with a trombone recital from Emily Nicolas, a student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, joined by Matthew Lam at the piano. This will be the first time we’ve featured the trombone at Live at Lunch since our first season back in 2010, so it’s one to look forward to.

Their recital begins with solo trombone and a piece inspired by the sounds of the Japanese Shakuhachi. Brahms’s last composed set of songs are next, followed by the love theme from The Godfather by Nino Rota. Stjepan Šulek’s Sonata is a favourite of trombonists and gives Matt a workout at the piano. The beautiful and mesmerising A Christian Song is followed by Emily’s own transcription of Dvořák’s famous Song to the Moon from Rusalka. The duo end on a lighter note with American bandleader, Arthur Pryor’s Thoughts on Love.
