Schumann Papillons, Op.2
Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition
Italian pianist Giuseppe Guarrera has been praised for his “delicate realisation and clarity”, a perfect fit for these two pieces depicting a masked ball and an art exhibition. Schumann’s masquerade describes the movement of the dance, changing scenes as he moves from room to room. Mussorgsky’s most famous piano work was considered so demanding for the pianist that it was never published during his lifetime. Now admired as a virtuosic showpiece, it represents a retrospective exhibition of his friend Victor Hartmann’s artworks, with the instantly recognisable Promenade theme leading us between memorable scenes and portraits and ending spectacularly at the Great Gate of Kiev.
You can hear Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition performed by the Hallé on 10 December. Click here for details
