Schumann Nachtstücke
Robert Zuidam Three movements from Nox
Ravel Gaspard de la nuit
Dutch pianist Hannes Minnaar makes his first visit to our series with pieces from his 2020 album Nox, the Latin word for Night. Inspired by a nightmarish premonition, Schumann’s dark and chilling four Nachtstücke show him at his poetic best, creating an exhilarating lyrical soundworld. Dutch composer Robert Zuidam composed his Nocturnes for Hannes, with each depicting aspects of darkness and toil. Finally, Ravel’s dark masterpiece, Gaspard de la Nuit is brilliantly evocative and imaginative, and was intended by Ravel to be the most difficult work in the piano repertoire. It’s based on three macabre poems: the delicate Ondine, the terror of Le Gibet and the mythical, scintillating Scarbo.
