Jan Latham-Koenig conductor

Dora Pejačević Overture for Large Orchestra
Sibelius Violin Concerto
Mahler Symphony No. 1

The first visit to Nottingham by a Croatian orchestra also brings rising star British violinist, Tamsin Waley-Cohen to perform Sibelius’s atmospheric Violin Concerto, whose icy drama pitches the desolate beauty of its virtuoso solo lines against a taut orchestral chorus. It’s a fascinating contrast to the concert’s opener: a passionate, richly Romantic overture by the aristocratic Dora Pejačević, a pioneering figure amongst Croatian composers.

Mahler’s First Symphony was no less ground-breaking, reflecting his belief that the symphony ‘must be like the world. It must contain everything.’ Drawing widely on different musical traditions, there’s a strong sense of a personal, sometimes dreamlike journey, opening with a shimmering midsummer sunrise, and evoking rustic peasant dances, military fanfares and a parodic funeral march based on Frère Jacques. The thrilling finale plunges the listener into an existential storm before marching out in triumph, all seven French horns standing to blaze out a majestic chorale.

This concert replaces the previously advertised performance by the China Symphony Orchestra of Shenzhen.
