For the first time ever at the Theatre Royal Nottingham, see a brand new amateur production of the world’s most popular musical, Les Misérables, in celebration of the show’s 40th anniversary.

The production is in collaboration with Carlton Operatic Society, TheCast and Theatre Royal Nottingham.

Nottingham Operatic are thrilled to have been asked by Cameron Mackintosh and MTI to lead one of eleven amateur premieres of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s multi-award winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables.

Since opening in London in 1985, it has won numerous Olivier awards and Tony Awards on Broadway. It continues to find new audiences all over the world – seen by over 130 million people in 53 countries and sung in 22 languages.

Cameron Mackintosh commented: “As we approach the extraordinary landmark of the 40th record-breaking year of the iconic musical’s London run, alongside countless productions around the world, we are delighted to invite 11 of our leading amateur companies in the UK to stage, for the first time, the entire show in their own productions. This will involve many hundreds of amateur performers around the country, becoming part of our own yearlong celebrations.”

2025 is a year of celebrations for Nottingham Operatic. They are staging wonderful musicals to celebrate 100 years of performing at the Theatre Royal Nottingham starting with Guys and Dolls (October 2024), finishing with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (October 2025).

With a cast of 100 from across the whole East Midlands region, Nottingham Operatic will bring to life Victor Hugo’s 19th century France in a dramatic story of passion and redemption. Its wonderful score includes the songs ‘One Day More’, ‘Bring Him Home’, ‘Stars’, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘Master of the House’ and many more.
