Opera and dance combine in this story with a dark heart and strong contemporary resonance.

Susanna is the victim of two powerful, predatory men out to destroy her reputation. As society swallows their lies and public opinion turns, she holds fast to her truth. It’s a compelling story for our times brought to life in a new production by director Olivia Fuchs and choreographer Marcus Jarrell Willis, who throw a critical lens on violence against women and gender-based injustice. The piece explores the corrupting influence of power structures and the challenge of creating an inclusive and equitable society.

This collaboration between Opera North and Phoenix Dance Theatre is set against some of Handel’s most memorably melodic music, with powerful choral moments for the Chorus of Opera North as well as touching solo arias.

All performances include integrated visual vernacular (physical performance drawing on sign language, mime and theatre techniques).

“The matching of Mozart’s Requiem – but with dance – with a new piece from South Africa was magical.   It was a truly memorable event.”

“It was an amazing experience for me and my family. We’ve never been able to see anything like this before.”

“Absolutely resonant.  Deeply moving.  I salute everyone involved.in the end, profoundly uplifting.”

“I thought it was a wonderful collaboration between different cultures and demonstrated our common humanity, the anguish we experience when we lose someone and our resilience and creativity. The dancing was very exciting and energetic. The contrast between the two halves of the performance worked brilliantly. Thank you.”

“I was absolutely transfixed by Requiem. It combined all my passions: one of my absolute favourite choral works, modern dance and a live orchestra. I couldn’t believe how excited I was to be seeing it and it surpassed all my expectations. One of the best performances I have ever seen in my life.”

“The best theatrical performance I have seen.”

“It was a wonderful evening: music and dancing extraordinary,”

“We found this profoundly moving, of the highest quality and thought provoking. More such exciting programming please.”

“Putting your singers and Phoenix together was such a joyful collaboration. Requiem is a massively important piece for me personally and the dance enhanced the emotional experience and also opened out into a fascinating cultural collaboration.”

“This was one of the most  incredible performances I have ever seen. It left me speechless and in awe with tears running down my face. Thank you.”

“Very impressive. Fantastic, brave concept. Perfectly executed by many artists working in seamless harmony”

“An emotional journey performed with energy , passion and beauty.”

“The integration of the singers with the dancers was so imaginative. Beautifully done”

“Best performance of Mozart requiem I’ve ever heard – sublime”

“One of the best events I have been to. The beauty of the requiem  was enhanced by raw emotion conveyed by exceptional dance. The second piece again conveyed strong emotion of grief and fellowship at the time of loss with the added dimension of ritual from Africa bringing, for me, a strong sense of community. We have so much to gain from learning from each others heritage. Fabulous.”

“I found Requiem uplifting, innovative, and one of the most important productions I’ve seen in a long while. Thank you.”

“This was such an amazing performance. Please do it again/tour it. Our friend was dying in hospital when we came. He died last night and honestly watching this performance helped so much. Also so good to see how much the chorus enjoyed performing”

“The performance was so heartfelt and the audience response showed how engaged and moved we all were. A full house, so obviously well conceived. I feel sorry more people who didn’t get the opportunity to see this.”

“I really loved the performances and felt it was very interesting linking the two together. I will never want to listen to Mozart’s Requiem again without it being interpreted in dance! The two dance groups were wonderful and their dance styles and costumes different and interesting. The contrast between the emotions of the two musical pieces, and the corresponding dance choreography, was moving. I enjoyed the traditional African flavour of the second piece. And it was great hearing a piece I’m familiar with followed by one that’s new. The whole thing was magical and I would like to see more performances like it.”

“I have been to performances by Opera North and Phoenix Dance: but this was very special. I particularly enjoyed (bowled over by) the Jazzart Dance Theatre. I thought Opera North Chorus used a lot of movement when they sang. And 2 amazing male singers (tenor and bass soloists).”

“The international collaboration really added something special. I felt like I was seeing something you don’t get to see often, a unique coming together of 4 incredible groups of artists. Also, more collabs with PDT, please. We’re ON and PDT regulars and are incredibly chuffed to have those two companies on our doorstep.”

“It was lovely to see such a large scale collaboration with genuinely multi-cultural collaboration.”

“I loved the innovative collaboration between 2 fantastic art forms- opera and dance. More please!”

“Please thank all those involved in Requiem for a visceral, thoughtful and beautiful interpretation of this and the after party piece”

“Wonderful performance, it was first time my children have seen modern dance live and they enjoyed it.”

“I loved the way dancers and singers were integrated in the performance and they all looked like they were having a great time.”

“Congratulations Opera North for leading the way with innovative, collaborative programming.”

“It was brilliant musically and a unique combination of music and dance and a great collaboration with South African artists”

“I knew and have sung the Requiem many times but found this a very different and wonderful interpretation. The music and dance together were very effective. I like the freshness of Opera North’s work.”

“Artistically, it looked very creative & stimulating.”

“Please offer more of this type of event. To hear the full chorus was a treat”

“This was an amazing experience. I look forward to more jointproductions from Opera North and Phoenix Ballet. World class.”

“It was a fantastic experience that enriched me as a person. Thank you”

“A wonderful afternoon- so loved it.”

“Everyone involved in Requiem should be really proud. Thoroughly enjoyed.”

“This was a very powerful emotional performance”

“I had high expectations and they were surpassed.”

“We loved After Tears, had lots to say about death and celebrating the life of a loved one.”

“Was delighted to experience something that drew on local talent (Phoenix Dance) and clearly appealed to a younger and more ethnically diverse audience than some that I have been to.”

“Luci and Zoe were wonderfully communicative and welcoming for our group (Touchstone, Your Space) and made the visit highly accessible and enjoyable. This is such an incredible opportunity for our group members and a special memory to share. It has helped to impact positively on the wellbeing and cultural experiences or our group and individual members. Thank you so much!!”

“It was also a most emotional performance, which had me several times in tears. A bold experiment.”

“’Requiem’ was an incredible production, especially loved the combination of singing with contemporary dance, and how the singers moved & interacted with the dancers”

“The best thing I’ve witnessed in a very long time.”

“It is remarkable and current!”

“It was really inspiring to experience such an engaging combination of classical and contemporary music and dance and hugely enjoyable. Bravo Opera North!!”

“Loved the collaboration and mix of art forms. Worked tremendously well and would love to see more of this.”

“Exceptionally stimulating and innovative concept.”

“Thrilled to see the collaboration between two of the City’s great cultural companies – confidence and imagination enabling the whole to be so much greater than the sum of its parts”

“Having four outstanding organisations combine to put on this performance made me proud. The quality of the collaboration needs to be maintained. This was a really, really, special performance.”

“The performance was outstanding. I love when opera north does bold things.”

“It was  very moving and a triumph for all the artists involved. The dancers and singers blended their roles perfectly.

“A breathtaking experience.”

“I was especially moved by ‘After Tears’, where the music and dance were so fully integrated.”

“Utterly compelling performance- bravo.”
