Beethoven Violin Concerto
Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique

Russian violinist Alena Baeva joins rising star French maestro, Maxime Pascal for Beethoven’s enduringly popular Violin Concerto. Revolutionary in conception, it treats the soloist as a co-creator in its grand design, rather than as a virtuosic showpiece. After the drama of the symphonically-scaled first movement, Beethoven gives us a serene slow movement before a buoyant rondo dances its way to the finish. Inspired by the Berlioz’s obsessive love for the actress Harriet Smithson, the Symphonie Fantastique is a feverish, partly autobiographical drama of an artist haunted by the image of his ideal woman. It’s a tremendous showpiece, with a finale like no other as the hero attends his own ‘funeral’, a diabolic witches’ sabbath. With Berlioz’s imagination firing at white heat, this torrid tale is delivered with terrific élan, taking the orchestra into previously unimagined places.

You can hear Mussorgsky’s original piano version of Pictures at an Exhibition performed by Giuseppe Guarrera on 7 November. Click here for details
