Jiří Rožeň conductor
Eric Lu piano

Martinů La Bagarre
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4
Dvořák Symphony No. 8

This concert brings a first encounter with young American, Eric Lu, winner of the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition, and the concerto that earned him the title. Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto emerged from a period of astonishing creations, his piano masterpiece arguably the most original. Beginning with a whisper, this captivating work delivers a stream of surprises, notably when it pits the quiet but steadfast voice of the piano against a chorus of angry strings, inspired by Orpheus charming the Furies in the underworld. Eric’s artistry should prove every bit as disarming.

Also making his first appearance in Nottingham is conductor, Jiří Rožeň, a passionate advocate of Czech composers. There’s a brace here: Martinů’s feisty La Bagarre distils his Parisian experiences into ten tumultuous minutes, and Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony is fit to burst with some of his most gorgeous and uplifting tunes, achingly tender at its heart and full of tearaway high spirits.
